Bitwarden Password Manager

Bitwarden

Bitwarden is that rare example of my discrediting my credo that if you aren’t paying for a product, you are the product. Password managers are another spoke in the wheel of security measures that are increasingly becoming essential. I started with Lastpass but found that too flaky and Dashlane was a bit too aggressive. I found my solution in 1Password and have been a premium subscriber for many years and that is not about to change.

Bitwarden is open-source software that we believe to be one of the best password managers available today. It’s user friendly and highly secure, and includes almost everything individuals, teams. Bitwarden is the easiest and safest way to store all of your logins and passwords while conveniently keeping them synced between all of your devices. Password theft is a serious problem. The websites and apps that you use are under attack every day. Security breaches occur and your passwords are stolen. 13 hours ago  Bitwarden's free version has the basics of a good password manager, and its premium features are inexpensive. However, Bitwarden isn't the most intuitive platform to use.

However, somewhere online I fell across a review of Bitwarden which was stated to be not only probably the best password manager available but the best free password manager. Intriguing.
It achieves this by being open source so the background workings are open to scrutiny. There are paid-for options available, but for an individual seeking to secure access to online sites, Bitwarden makes perfect sense if you can do without the p[aid for extras such as reports, seeking out weak and duplicate passwords, etc.
Set up is extremely simple and Bitwarden allows you to import passwords from your existing manager. A test import from 1Password was straightforward.

As you would expect, there are desktop, Android and IoS versions available and there is no , limitation on how many devices the software can be installed on. The browser extension resembles the web app and includes a password generator, making using the password manager on the fly even easier.

As far as security is concerned, Bitwarden has been audited by Cure53, a German security company; enough said!
The Bitwarden vault is secured with AES-256, and your master password is never sent to Bitwarden. It is used to generate a key that’s further hashed with SHA-256. If you’re extra paranoid, you can host all your passwords on your own server.

Bitwarden offers encryption on a zero-knowledge model — meaning only you have access to your passwords — using the cipher AES-256, which protects passwords using hundreds of thousands of rounds of password “hashing” that turns your passwords into scrambled versions of themselves that can’t be reverse-engineered. It gives you the option of hosting your passwords on Bitwarden’s servers or locally, eliminating any risk of a data breach on the company’s end.

The potential downside of zero-knowledge security and encryption is that, if you ever lose your password, it’s gone for good. But the overall upsides of Bitwarden’s approach are considerable: If you pair strong passwords with the deep password-hashing functionality the software provides, you should have plenty of peace of mind on the security front.

Bitwarden has been audited by third-party security experts, whom it invites to test its limits by making its source code fully available. It also offers two-factor authentication — a must for any modern password management solution — free for use with Google Authentication and email, for which you get a wider range of options with the Premium version.
